Cement closed up 1.4 percent at 554 rupees, having risen as much as 4 percent earlier, in a Mumbai market that closed up 5.46 percent. India’s central bank raised its key interest rate by 50 basis points in July to a seven-year high of 9 percent, raising the cost of borrowing.
For month to month comparisons, sales were up in the West but down or flat in the rest of the country. In the Midwest sales declined -5.98% and were down -4.4% in the Northeast. In the South, sales were the same as they were in March. The sales pace was up by 6.38% in the West. Nationwide though, the sales pace was down by -19.31% compared to last year. The regional declines over the year were: Midwest 19.71%, South -18.64%, West -15.25%, and Northeast -14.71%. May sales pace figures will be released at the very end of June. The limits on land ownership and distributed surplus land to the landless though both these measures were not as successful as they were originally intended to be. It offered tenant’s protection from eviction, provided hundreds of families’ sites for the construction of houses, and was instrumental in raising rural wages and introducing minimum wages and social security schemes for agricultural workers.
