The principles of Vastu Shastra intend to balance these effects, by emphasizing the need to pay attention to the direction and size of the homes. Proper positioning of the building and its components such as drawing room, study room, bedrooms, dining room, kitchen and bathroom is planned using Vastu Shastra. They even take care of the alignment of furniture in the unit if it is a pre-furnished apartment. The open sky has a great influence. The effect of terrestrial-energies can be felt uninterruptedly. Buildings prove a barrier to the effects of open sky. Therefore, the importance of roofs or lawns gets emphasized. This is one of the reasons why traditionally every house in India used to have an open space (Court Yard) in the center of the house. It provided the dwellers not only the open sky but also sunlight and cross-ventilation of air.
